I was fortunate to be able to unveil the “When I Grow Up” sculpture with three other artists at the Grand Junction Fire Department (Colorado) Station 1 as well as the police station. This sculpture was the culmination of 1500 hours of work. During the process, I re-crafted the sculpture 3 times to arrive at the final design. Perfection and detail are important to me, and I believe the end result shows that.
The Grand Junction Fire Department was very pleased with the result, and thought that the sculpture will provide an inviting and approachable element to the station and tie their work directly into the community. I find that my sculptures are much more than bronze representations, they invoke conversation, interaction, and approachability. “When I Grow Up” will hopefully be a piece that not only ties the work of the firefighters in Grand Junction to their community, but inspires young people to consider an occupation in the fire service…when they grow up.
